In September 2025 a victim compensation procedure was added to the Criminal Procedure Code (Articles 165³–165⁸). A guilty verdict orders the convicted person to pay compensation if they are convicted of, for example, large-scale fraud, extortion or embezzlement, property damage over GEL 10,000, abuse of authority in a company or computer crime — and the victim has not waived compensation in writing.
Compensation is paid first from the convicted person's own property, then from property they gave to relatives or others for free or cheaply. The property is frozen, and the convicted person — a Georgian citizen or a person with status in Georgia — is banned from leaving the country until they pay or the victim waives it. Giving the convicted person benefits above the legal limit is itself a crime.

Questions & answers
Which crimes does compensation cover?
For example: large-scale fraud, extortion and embezzlement, property damage over GEL 10,000, abuse of authority in a company and large-scale computer crime.
What if the convicted person leaves the country?
If they are a Georgian citizen or a person with status in Georgia, they are banned from leaving until compensation is paid — unless you waive it in writing.
Can I also file a civil claim?
Yes. Compensation doesn't take away your right to a civil claim — you just can't claim again the part you already received.
