Bringing medication into Georgia — what is restricted
Many medicines that are ordinary elsewhere — Lyrica (pregabalin), tramadol, codeine products, ADHD medication, sleeping pills and sedatives — are under special control in Georgia. You can bring them in, but only with proper documents. Without them, a criminal case can start.

Under Article 19 of the Law on Narcotic Drugs, Psychotropic Substances, Precursors and Narcological Assistance, an individual — including someone in transit — may carry narcotic and psychotropic medicines for treatment with proper medical and customs documents. This is not treated as import. The detailed procedure is approved by the Health Ministry with the Revenue Service.
Bringing them in without documents is a serious risk: illegally importing a narcotic drug carries 6 to 9 years under Article 262, and a psychotropic or potent substance in a large amount 2 to 5 years under Article 263. Under a 2022 Constitutional Court decision, prison cannot be imposed for bringing in up to 9.68 g of dried marijuana for personal use.
What to carry
- A doctor's prescription or medical certificate showing the diagnosis, medicine and dose — preferably with an English translation
- The medicine in its original packaging
- Only the quantity your treatment needs
- Declare it at customs if the medicine is controlled
Which medicines are controlled
The controlled lists include, for example, pregabalin (Lyrica), tramadol, codeine, buprenorphine, methylphenidate, alprazolam and zolpidem. For pregabalin, the amount is counted by the full weight of the medicine — so even a few packs can count as a 'large amount'. Check your medicine before travelling — we can help.

Questions & answers
Can I bring Lyrica (pregabalin) into Georgia?
Yes, for treatment — with medical documents and a customs declaration. Without documents a criminal case can start, because pregabalin is controlled in Georgia.
Customs took my medicine — what should I do?
Don't give a statement without a lawyer and keep all documents. We check which article applies and work to close the case if the medicine was for your treatment.
I'm only in transit — does this apply to me?
Yes. The law covers people in transit too: carry the medicine with medical and customs documents.
