Under Article 8 of the Law on the Rules for Georgian Citizens Leaving and Entering Georgia, a child under 16 can travel abroad temporarily with the permission of one legal representative (parent) and accompanied by an adult with legal capacity. From 16 to 18, if not married, with the consent of one legal representative.
For a passport, one parent's consent is enough only in cases set by law — for example, if the child is 16 or older, the other parent's parental rights have been removed or restricted, their whereabouts are unknown, or travel is needed for medical treatment. If parents can't agree on the child's travel, a court decides.

## If a child was taken unlawfully or isn't being returned

Georgia is a party to the Hague Convention on International Child Abduction. If a child was wrongfully taken to, or is being kept in, another member country, you can ask for the child's return — time is critical.

## Questions & answers

### Can I take my child abroad without the other parent's consent?

By law, for temporary travel of a child under 16, one parent's permission and an adult escort are enough. But a passport usually needs both parents' consent, and in a dispute a court decides.

### The other parent won't consent to a passport — what can I do?

In some cases one parent's consent is enough (e.g. the other parent's whereabouts are unknown or travel is needed for treatment). Otherwise you can go to court.

### The other parent took our child abroad and won't return them — what should I do?

If the child is in a Hague Convention country, you can ask for the child's return. Act quickly — time matters a lot in these cases.
