# Marriage in Georgia for foreigners — requirements

Foreigners can register a marriage in Georgia — with a Georgian citizen or with each other, if they are in the country lawfully. There is no mandatory waiting period: a marriage is often registered on the day of application. We prepare the documents, translations and apostilles so you can use the marriage certificate in your own country.

Marriage is a union of a woman and a man, and it has legal effect only once registered with the Public Service Development Agency (Public Service Hall) — a religious ceremony alone does not create a marriage. The minimum age is 18.
The conditions of marriage are governed for each party by the law of their own country, and the form by Georgian law (Law on Private International Law, Article 44). That is why we check in advance whether your country has extra requirements.

## Who cannot marry

- Someone already married to another person

- Close relatives — parent and child, grandparent and grandchild, siblings

- Adoptive parent and adopted child

- Two people of the same sex — a same-sex marriage registered abroad has no legal effect in Georgia

## Documents you need

- Passport — with a notarised Georgian translation

- If previously married — proof of divorce or of the spouse's death, apostilled and translated

- Every document issued abroad needs an apostille (or consular legalisation) and a certified translation

- 2 adult witnesses at the registration

## How registration works

- You file the application at the Public Service Hall — in person or through a representative. The application is valid for 2 months.

- The marriage is registered at the time stated in the application — often the same day. Same-day registration can be refused when the office is busy.

- Both spouses must attend in person with 2 witnesses — you cannot marry through a representative.

- The marriage certificate is issued in Georgian. To use it abroad, it needs an apostille and a translation.

## Questions & answers

### Can two foreigners marry in Georgia?

Yes, if both are in Georgia lawfully. There is no citizenship requirement.

### How quickly can we get married?

There is no mandatory waiting period. The marriage is registered at the time stated in the application — often the same day.

### Will our marriage be recognised in our country?

Many countries recognise a marriage concluded abroad under local law. The certificate needs an apostille and a translation. The exact recognition rules depend on your country's law — we check them in advance.

### Is a church wedding enough?

No. Only a marriage registered by the state has legal effect.
